The Crow's Nest

The North Wind does blow and yes, we have snow! Snow is piled up in all corners of the state. January is supposed to be the “driest” month of winter, but you would never know that by all the snowy days we have experienced. Then there is the wind. Uffda, last Friday we left for Grand Forks and a weekend of Sioux hockey. We took highway 18 down to #2. It was awful. It was snowing and blowing. Everything was so white we could not even make out where the road actually was. It was a nail-biter all the way down. We have also experienced bitter cold weather with many mornings way below zero. This is winter in North Dakota.

Okay, I got that off my chest. Now on to more pleasant topics. Last Saturday I was in Bed, Bath and Beyond when this nice young lady came up to me and asked if I was Rita. I said I was. She proceeded to tell me how much she enjoys the Edinburg website and reads it often. I had to ask who she was. She said she was Lisa Roder, Jim and Colleen Langerud’s daughter. Her words absolutely made my day. All the frustration I sometimes feel when technical problems arise with the site just melted away. Thank you Lisa so much for your kindness. I do apologize for not knowing you. Even though we have been back in Edinburg 19 years, it still is hard for me to connect faces with families that were either very small or not yet born when I left Edinburg in 1962.

The Valley-Edinburg Titans boy’s basketball team is really doing well. They have won 9 out of their 10 games. There have been a couple of articles about them in the Grand Forks Herald. I understand the girl’s team also is having a great year. That is wonderful. It won’t be long until it will be tournament time. The season passes quickly.

Big news around the state yesterday was our Senator Kent Conrad announcing he would not seek re-election in 2012. He has been our senator since 1986. Regis Philbin also announced he was retiring from his daily television show at the end of the season. My stars, what will I have on now at 9 am every morning.

Flooding forecasts were given yesterday. It sounds like there will be flooding this spring. I know they predict Devil’s Lake could rise another 3 feet. I think Devil’s Lake is one of the eeriest sights in North Dakota. It is so huge. All you see is water, water, water. Our nephew Grant Lindell and his wife Sandy’s lake home is surrounded by water and they can’t get to it.

Chuck and I are taking our 3 kids and their spouses to Germany this summer. We lived there for four years while Kris, Mike and Dave were in grade and middle school. Chuck and I have been back 6 times, but the kids haven’t. We always travel by the “seat of our pants” when we go to Europe. We never make any plans. We just rent a car and GO! We can’t do that with 4 couples. We have spent hours making reservations for each night we are there. I told them we would not stay in big chain hotels, but rather in small family owned hotels. Most of them only have 6 – 12 rooms so this has been a challenge. We booked the last needed night yesterday. We are planning to spend one night in a castle in Bavaria. I know we will have a grand time.

Have a great day and we will talk later.
